Link building through social is incredibly effective and can be a lot less time consuming than the traditional methods of link building. You can post updates which can take a minute of your time and instantly reach thousands of people with the potential to be shared to others.

Compare this to your traditional link building techniques which can take a lot of your time for link requests that may not even be approved or accepted. Sharing a link on social media platforms like Facebook provide the opportunity for your link to be shared thousands of times by your social media followers, with certain followers also possibly extending the reach and exposure of your post by linking your posts to their networks. Many people do not realise that an update through social has the potential to reach more than just their own followers and can have the potential to go viral.

There is a growing army of unhappy, unsatisfied, sometimes bitter and angry customers who take to social media to vent their frustrations about a brand’s products or services. Sometimes they can get abusive that their feedback is more an attack than a request for customer service.

No matter the size of your company, angry customer outbursts can damage your reputation online. These unsatisfied customers can come in various forms, one being a person who was hoping for good experience with your product or service and had a bad experience and wants to seek acknowledgement or a solution or the second being someone who actively uses social media to stop people from doing business with your company and does not care about your reply to their messages. From small to large businesses, having to manage and operate your social media strategy can be time consuming without having a plan. The ever changing scenario of social media allows interactions between your business and the consumer to be at all times as there is no time frame. It can be difficult to measure the outcome but to be in the routine of regular updates is another. A simple checklist that can be adopted by you can really have an impact in the way to use your social media.

However, not all will agree with the follow as it depends on how you want to manage your social media strategy. For those who are beginners on planning their social media strategy, here is some advice on your strategy.

Facebook

Update Facebook Page Status Daily – it does not take long to do. With post scheduling, you can plan what you would like to post ahead of time.
Post at least 3 topics a day – make sure you keep it relevant to your business/industry. Share your opinion on the matter that you are sharing. A brief comment would be appreciated for discussion amongst your fans.
Like a page – a part from the relevant pages you may also like other pages to show your fans that you have other interests. Try to like pages that your fans may have interests in.
Ask people to comment, like or share posts – the more people engage with your page the better. Reply to people’s comments where possible.

Twitter

Tweet at least 10 times a day – you should never forget to tweet about your business, from new promotional offers to new blog posts. On the other hand, shower your knowledge to your followers when they interact with you. Remember, you can also share your humour to your followers too.
Follow new people per day – start off with the influential people in your industry followed by other businesses you have contact with and then everyone you think is worth following. If people follow you, there is no harm in following them back as well.
Use the retweet and favourite buttons – if you like a tweet on your timeline, you want to retweet or favourite it. It saves you the time of finding something yourself and also enhances your relationship with the user who tweeted it first.

Google+

Post at least 3 times a day – much like on Facebook, try to keep it relevant to the industry with the occasional random post to show you are not a robot. The trend is to share an opinion in a professional manner.
Add new people in your Circles – same again, influential people in your industry and anyone you find interesting.
Hangout sessions – make use of the Google+ feature and host Hangouts for topics in your industry or other issues that concerns your audience.

Pinterest

Post images each week – As Pinterest is a visual platform, creating original content is not that easy. Take high quality pictures of your new products or examples of work and upload them regularly. If your business is offering services, try to think of other ways of presenting information visually.
Follow 5 new boards every week – find and follow interesting pin boards from users in your field.

LinkedIn

Update company profile and status – although LinkedIn is a professional network and posting multiple times a day is not advisable, you need to make sure your company status is updated regularly to reflect latest developments in the business.
Connect with 5 new people a week – carefully select the people who you want to connect with. Send a personal message with reason to add that particular person. It is not Twitter where you can follow anyone.
Ask for recommendations – recommendations are a great way to show what others think about your business.

YouTube

Upload a video a week – using videos are a great way to communicate messages to your audience. Try to upload your thoughts and opinions topics you want to discuss or answer a customer’s question.
Subscribe to new channels each week – while searching for videos to share you may come across new channels with amazing content. Be sure to subscribe for them as this will help you a lot in finding interesting videos for the future.
Replying to comments – you should aim to reply to 3 comments a day just to see what discussions are taking place. Your thoughts are appreciated and valued by your consumers.

Blogging

Write a blog post every week – another great way to reinforce your brand exposure online. Try writing a blog post every week about topics in your industry to show your expertise as well as sharing your services or products with new offers. Do not forget to share your blog post across all your social media platforms.

15 days to go until London is hosting the 2012 Olympics and it would be considered to be the first time social media will be in full swing in action off the tracks. You may have already seen information circulating over Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and be sure to see even more during the cause of the global event seen across the globe. So how does social media come into this Olympics compared to the Beijing 2008 Olympics?

Well, since Beijing Olympics in 2008, four years ago, social media was forming and growing. The usage of the web has shifted the way we consume information besides the technological development of mobile devices from smartphones and touch screen tablets. With the centre of attention on sports, viewers across the world will be using their social media accounts commenting on sporting events that they would be witnessing and seeing history written in the books. Whether you will be showing support to your nation or athletes, it is the time to be posting updates.  The most popular sporting events will be taking place with football, swimming, and track and field. This is going to lead to potential buzz over all social media platforms.

Not only will social media allow the main sponsors of the Olympics benefit from posting updates on their offers and news, it will increase your business pages if you post regular updates from the Olympics too. Your followers will be sure to see you post a photo on Facebook, a tweet on Twitter, a YouTube video and other ventures you explore during the Olympics. Using your Tumblr, Blog and Instagram or any other app you share posts, this is your chance to share your Olympic journey along with the athletes. Not only will you be sharing your thoughts on the Olympics, people around the world would be seeing your messages and it could lead to connections and building your business network even more.

Here are tips on what you could do on your following social media platforms;

- Tell the people on your Facebook Page, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest, who you are supporting within the events.
- Share any photos; you being at an event, watching the games or photos from the Olympics themselves.
- Ask your following who would win the event and carry out polls.
- Respond to your customers when they ask you questions.
- Share your location if you are attending any events.
- Share athlete posts.
- Share what you are doing during the Olympics.
- Do you have any special offers or promotions?
- Be patriotic towards the country you support.
- Tweeting with the Olympic tweets that occur.
- Create meme’s of athletes and share across all accounts.
- Be creative and sporty in your messages.
- If you have statistics or facts, share!

Over the past four years, social media is changing and rapidly. There are many apps and features that allow us to share content and experiences within seconds of each other. When history writes itself, so does the content on the web. Moments are created and we can all share it together.

If you are a business whether from small to large, and you are running a social media campaign for whatever reason, you must be thinking what is the outcome for carrying out a social media campaign? In most cases, the intended outcome of a social media campaign is to strengthen and increase the awareness of your brand. It is fair to say in the past, traditional methods of marketing were difficult to evaluate due to the complications of determining the link between a campaign and brand awareness. One of the appeals of social media marketing is the fact that as a digital campaign, it is possible to measure various activities and so to evaluate the effectiveness of your campaign.

Here are methods to measure the success and effectiveness of your social media campaign:

Brand exposure

This is simple, measuring your brand or business reach or potential viewers of your social media campaign is not quite as tracking the total number of Facebook fans, Twitter followers or YouTube subscribers you have. This can be also the same for the amount of followers you have on your Blog, Instagram and Tumblr. In order to get a better account of the online users, select a method to note down the numbers for your accounts on a weekly or monthly basis. This way you can see the difference of increase or decrease within the statistics you are collecting.

When using Facebook, you can record statistics on the following;
How many fans you have
Likes (on photo’s, statuses, links)

For Twitter:
How many followers your have
How many RT (ReTweets) you get
How many mentions/replies
How many you are following
How many Tweets have been favorited
How many DM (Direct Message) received

For YouTube:
Track your channel views
Subscriber numbers
Video views
Video likes/dislikes
Comments on video/channel

Your blog:
Visitors
Comments
Follow

This can be the same for your other social media accounts when it comes to collecting statistics.

Engagement

By measuring how many users engage and interact with your messages. You can evaluate the appeal and interest of your marketing efforts. The more engagement (positive or negative) you see the more effective and valuable your campaign.

Facebook:
Comments (on photo’s, statuses, links)
Likes (on photo’s, statuses, links)

Twitter:
RT (ReTweet) you get
Mentions/replies
Who has favorited your tweets
How many DM (Direct Message) received
Hashtags used

YouTube:
Comments (positive or negative)
Likes/Dislikes

Blog:
Number of new subscribers
Amount of comments/replies

Influence

When you have a high level of influence, you are more likely to inspire your followers to take some kind of action such as engaging with your message or purchasing your product or service.

  • The number of links to your message and content.
  • How often your twitter messages are retweeted.
  • How often your Facebook posts are liked, commented on and shared.
  • The influence of your followers and those who engaged with you should also be tracked here.

Whether you own a business or work for a business, the question you may be asking yourself, how can I use LinkedIn for business use? In March, there were over 100 million users signed up the professional network and the number of people joining increasing at present. There is definitely a huge network to market your business or the business you work for.

LinkedIn was created for people to make connections. It is one of the best platforms for connecting with former colleagues, current employers or people in the industry you are working in. You can easily connect with people who share the same niche and expertise as you. With the people you have worked with, you can recommend your work. Even so, Testimonials are a positive way for gaining respect from your connections and future employers.

Join Groups
Join as many groups as you can in your selected industry of business. By joining groups and participating in these groups, you will gain more credibility as an expertise, a specialist or a knowledgeable person in your area of work. Try to contribute to conversations and ask questions. By being more active within these discussions, you will show up under the group’s top influences.

Other Social Media Sites
Add your other social media sites to your LinkedIn profile. Companies are not expecting their employees to have some knowledge of social media and how to relate and use it for business practise. Post your updates from Twitter and YouTube and make sure your tweets and videos are relevant to what your business does. This will boost your social media presence too.

Connections
You can add connections by using your e-mail contacts. The more connections you have the better to build a strong network.

Invites to connections
When you would like to connect with someone who has similar attributes and characteristics as you, make sure you make the invitation more personal. If it is something you like about them or they are in the same industry as you, make sure you relate to them as it is more likely to gain you more connections. Remember each individual is different and by adding a reason to connect with someone proves they want to be your connection in your network.

No Spamming
Do not spam a connection with your business ideas and messages. In fact, build relationships with connections by asking questions and gaining an understanding on who you and what you stand for.

Find people
It is easy to find and search for people who you can connect with. You can search by company, education and by connections in common. It allows you to target a very specific range of people with whom you may have a lot in common with. Try to connect with people who are experts in your industry and other respectable people who have a lot of experience.

Recommendations
Ask for recommendations! This shows you have credibility from previous experiences. It is like a reference from a previous employer or colleague. This could lead to further opportunities from job prospects to job promotions and more connections.

From my previous blog post on the uses of Twitter for businesses, I have increasingly been aware of what businesses are doing to stay active on their accounts with their followers. I have noticed the engagement between businesses and followers which has given me food for thought on what can businesses tweet about to direct this social media interaction.

  8. Events you are participating in; this shows to your followers you are going to other events and not just yours.
  9. Quotes that aspire and inspire your business. You can share your inspiration to others!
  10. Solving problem and issues; help people who have problems with your product or service is another way to promote your brand.
  11. Popular events; be aware of the upcoming sporting, festivals and religious events.

  17. Sharing updates from your blog with a working URL.
  18. Direct people to your other social media tools (Facebook, Tumblr, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc) you have.
  19. Search for your business, products and services to respond to tweets that are about you.

What are Widgets?

Whilst I was blogging and browsing the internet for how businesses can use social media tools to market themselves as a business, I stumbled across widgets. I had known about the word widgets but I did not know what it was for or what it does. After doing some research and finding out the uses of widgets, I have realised the importance of widgets and have come up with some benefits of the use of widgets. View full article »

Here I am again, this time I am going point of the most common mistakes businesses are making on YouTube so you do not follow them. It maybe a visual form of sending messages across but it often lets people watch what you are doing rather than reading about it. Yes, YouTube is about videos but there is so much more you can do to improve how to handle your account as a business.

I have identified some mistakes businesses are making on YouTube and you can learn from these so called mistakes that you can avoid.

1. The channel has no theme
Do not post random videos which does not relate to your business. Create videos that relate to your business and industry. Some business channels lack a structure in their videos and people visit your channel to find more information about the business. It will make it easier for others to understand what your channel and videos are about.

2. The videos are not optimised
YouTube is a webpage, therefore it follows all of the same rules as a webpage when it comes to SEO (Search Engine Optimization). It is vital to include titles, tags and description in comparison to the videos you are creating. Using quality keywords in the tags and make sure the description explains what the video is about.

3. Not including FULL URL
To direct the traffic to your website, please include your full URL in the description. It is a link that points to your site from a very popular site.

4. Not including links to other social media
A lot of businesses are not putting their other social media links in the description. Show that you are on other networking sites and people will start to connect with you even more.

5. No Watermark
This can be overlooked at times, having a subtle image in your video of a logo for branding or just your website URL and other social media sites (Twitter or Facebook) works wonders.

6. No call for direction
I think this a mistake that can be avoided and should be always looked up on. Nothing saying, click the link below for more information, or visit my website or even comment about this video and let me know your thoughts. Have a specific call to action in your video or no one will take action. You should gently lead people by hand and tell exactly what to do.

7. Video quality (Sound and visual)
I know when you are out and about you have your mobile phones and digital cameras but sometimes the video quality can be off putting to watch depending on where you are recording. Also, if you are recording your opinions and thoughts, make sure you are in a quite environment to avoid sound issues. If you can, try to film in HD.

8. Video structure
I have noticed businesses making videos and trying to fit everything under a time limit. Make your videos short so that you can make more videos about other issues surrounding your business and industry. Have a video for one topic.

9. No Comments
Disabling the function to not allow people to comment is a big no, no. YouTube is a place where people come to watch videos and share their thoughts. Allow people to comment and give their opinions too. If you do not interact with your users, then you are not fulfilling the use of YouTube.

10. Favouriting videos
There is no harming for you to favourite your videos that can relate to your business and industry. It shows you are not only thinking about yourself but sharing what competitions and industry experts are doing.

I hope you all enjoyed reading these most common mistakes businesses make on YouTube and avoid to make them yourself. If you would like me to research more about other social media tools businesses can use, please feel free to comment and leave your thoughts.
