Gameweek 3 – Southampton v Man Utd

Manchester United goes on to entertain Premier League new boys Southampton at St Mary’s, looking to shrug off the opening two games of the season. After last week’s 3-2 win against Fulham, the team look to keep clean sheets before losing out on the league last season on goal difference.

The newly promoted side suffered their first defeat after returning to the Premier League against Wigan 2-0. They will be given a tough test against Man Utd especially facing Man City on the opening day of the season. Saints new signings are unlikely to feature and manager Adkins has a strong squad to choose from. As for any promoted team, they will be looking to avoid relegation and will look towards getting as many points as possible.

The Red Devils will without Rooney for 1-2 months with a horrible gash on his leg and he is a threat that will be missed during the attacks. Sir Alex Ferguson is furious with the FA leaking news about Ashley Young nursing a knee injury. There is some hope in defence with Johnny Evans returning into the back four. It may look like Carrick will be in the centre of midfield with Scholes. This fixture will be Sir Alex Ferguson’s 1,000 league match as Manchester United manager.

If the Saints gave Man City an end to end game, expect another game to be like this. Both teams will want to score when the opportunity raises and take their chances. I am going for a 3-2 win for Man Utd.

Player to watch;
Van Persie, after scoring his first goal in Man Utd’s colours, he will be looking to add to his tally.

Possible starting XI:

Southampton; Gazzaniga, Richardson, Ward-Prowse, Lee, Shaw, Butterfield, Chaplow, Seaborne, Hammond, Puncheon and Sharp.

Man Utd; De Gea, Rafael, Evans, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Scholes, Nani, Kagawa and Van Persie.
